A tile roof replacement strips off the worn tiles and ridge capping and gives your home a new, watertight roof of concrete or terracotta tiles. It is the right choice when the tiles themselves have reached the end of their life.
A roof restoration costs much less than a new roof, and for most tiled roofs it is all the roof needs. Tiles that have reached the end of their lifespan are different. They become porous and can no longer shed water through Australian weather, and cleaning and coating them will not fix that.
Our founder Justin started as a roofing apprentice in 1997 and worked as a tradesman on new builds before starting Traditional Roofing in 2019, so laying a tiled roof from the battens up is work he knows well.
We look after the replacement from the first inspection to the final clean up. The exact scope depends on your roof, and your quote sets out every step.
We inspect the whole roof, check the condition of the tiles, valleys and ridge capping, and send you a clear, detailed quote with no hidden fees.
The worn tiles and ridge capping are removed and the roof is stripped back to the battens, so we can see the condition of the timber underneath.
We check the battens before the new tiles go on, and your quote sets out any battens that need replacing. Rusted valley irons are replaced with new ones so rain runs off the roof and into the gutters.
The new tiles are laid and secured across the roof, ready for the ridge and hip capping to go on.
The ridge and hip capping is bedded and finished with flexible pointing, which moves with the roof and keeps wind and rain out along the ridge lines.
We check every part of the new roof, clear away the old tiles and debris, and leave your property clean and tidy.
Not sure your roof needs replacing? We will tell you. If a roof restoration or a roof repair will do the job, that is what we will recommend.
Book a Free AssessmentChoosing between these comes down to the condition of the tiles. Here is how we tell them apart.
A tile roof repair suits a roof with a few broken tiles, a worn valley or a section of cracked pointing, where the rest of the roof is sound.
A roof restoration suits a roof that is showing its age all over but still has tiles in good enough condition to clean, repair, repoint and coat.
If only part of the roof is affected, such as a damaged section where the tiles and battens underneath need replacing together, we may recommend re-tiling that section rather than replacing the whole roof.
A replacement suits a roof where the tiles have worn out and no longer keep water out, even after repairs.
Not every worn tiled roof needs replacing. These are restoration jobs, where the tiles were still in good enough condition to clean, repair and coat. Drag the handle on each photo to see the difference.

If you notice any of them, book a free roof assessment and we will explain whether the roof needs replacing or whether a repair or restoration will keep the water out. Please do not climb up to check the tiles yourself, because tiles crack easily underfoot and roofs are dangerous.
Worn tiles soak up water instead of shedding it. When that is happening across most of the roof, we usually recommend new tiles.
Leaks that return after repairs, or leaks in different parts of the roof at once, are one of the signs we look for when deciding whether a roof needs replacing.
When large numbers of tiles across the roof are cracked or crumbling, replacing them one by one no longer makes sense.
If your roof has been patched many times over the years, we will check whether another repair still makes sense or whether new tiles are the better option.

The clearest sign is tiles that have become porous and no longer shed water, along with leaks that keep returning after repairs. Large numbers of cracked or crumbling tiles are another sign. We inspect the roof and explain whether it needs replacing or whether a repair or restoration is enough.
Restoring a tiled roof costs much less than replacing it, and in most cases a restoration is all the roof needs. We only recommend a tile roof replacement when the tiles have worn out and a restoration will not keep the water out. Our guide on choosing between roof restoration and replacement explains the difference in more detail.
The cost depends on the size and pitch of the roof, the tiles you choose, the condition of the battens and valleys, and how easy the roof is to access. We start with a free roof assessment and then send a clear, detailed quote that includes everything.
