When the Mortar Fails, Ridge Caps Come Loose
Your roof keeps your family safe from Melbourne’s weather, yet the materials holding it together are easy to overlook — until something starts to move.
The ridge and hip caps along the peaks of your roof sit on a bed of mortar called bedding. Years of UV rays, rain and temperature changes break that mortar down until it cracks, crumbles and lets go of the caps it’s meant to hold.
We rebed ridge and hip capping properly: the caps are lifted, the old bedding is removed, fresh bedding is laid and every cap is set back in line — then finished with flexible pointing. And you deal directly with the owner from the first visit to the final check.

Our Roof Rebedding Process
Rebedding isn’t a patch-up job. We take the ridge line back to a clean base and rebuild it, so your caps are held firmly for years to come.
Full Roof Inspection
We check every ridge and hip and the rest of the roof, then give you a clear, detailed quote for the work needed.
Lift the Ridge Caps
Caps are carefully lifted and set aside. Any that are cracked or broken are replaced.
Remove the Old Bedding
The old, crumbling mortar is cleared away, back to a clean, sound base ready for new bedding.
Lay Fresh Bedding
New bedding mortar is laid along each ridge and hip line to give the caps a solid, even foundation.
Re-Set & Repoint
Every cap is bedded back into a straight line, then sealed with flexible pointing to keep wind and rain out.
Clean Up & Final Check
We check each ridge line is straight and secure, clear away the old mortar and leave your property tidy.
Only the pointing cracked? If the bedding underneath is still sound, repointing on its own may be all your roof needs — we’ll tell you honestly.
Book a Free AssessmentWhat Solid Bedding Does for Your Roof
As a general rule, a tiled roof needs some maintenance after 10–15 years, and that usually includes rebedding and repointing. Done at the right time, it adds years to the life of your roof.
Holds Caps Securely
Firm bedding keeps ridge and hip caps locked in place, even when strong winds hit the most exposed parts of your roof.
Keeps Water Out
Gaps under loose caps let rain into the roof space. Fresh bedding and pointing close those gaps along every ridge.
Stops Damage Spreading
Loose caps can shift, crack and fall, damaging the tiles below. Rebedding early stops a small problem growing.
Far Cheaper Than Replacing
Rebedding your existing ridge capping costs far less than a new roof and gets it working the way it did years ago.

View Full GallerySigns Your Roof Needs Rebedding
It’s worth knowing the difference: bedding holds your ridge caps in place, while pointing seals the joins over the top. When the bedding goes, these are the signs you’ll usually see.
Loose or moving ridge caps
Caps that rock, sit crooked or have shifted out of line have lost the grip of the mortar underneath them.
Mortar cracking or breaking off
Pieces of mortar on the roof, in the gutters or on the ground are a sure sign the bedding is breaking down.
Leaks near the ridge line
Water stains or damp patches on the ceiling can mean rain is getting in under loose caps.
10+ years since any maintenance
If your roof hasn’t had any maintenance in 10–15 years, the bedding is likely due for a professional check.

Rebedding replaces the old mortar that your ridge and hip caps sit on. We lift the caps, remove the deteriorated bedding, lay fresh bedding and set the caps back in line, then seal them with flexible pointing.
Bedding is the mortar underneath your ridge caps that holds them in position. Pointing is the layer applied over the bedding to seal the joins against water and dust. Rebedding fixes the base; repointing renews the seal.
Loose or crooked ridge caps, mortar cracking or breaking away, and leaks near the ridge line are the most common signs. The easiest way to be sure is to book a free roof assessment — we’ll inspect it and tell you honestly.
Yes, if the bedding is still solid. Pointing over bedding that has already failed won’t hold the caps in place for long, though, so we always check first and only recommend rebedding when it’s needed.
There’s no fixed timeframe, but as a general rule a tiled roof needs some maintenance after 10–15 years — often including rebedding and repointing. Roofs in exposed or windy spots may need attention sooner.
It depends on how many metres of ridge and hip capping need rebedding, the roof’s height and access, and whether any caps or tiles need replacing. We start with a free roof assessment, then give you a clear, detailed quote with no hidden fees.
Yes. Our roof restorations include rebedding where needed and repointing, along with repairs, cleaning and a membrane coating where required. If only the ridge capping is the problem, we can rebed on its own.
We only work on residential concrete and terracotta tiled roofs, and we rebed them in Sunbury, across Greater Melbourne and in the Macedon Ranges. If you are not sure whether we cover your suburb, book a free roof assessment or give us a call.
